Applications are now open for funding through the Mzansi Golden Economy (MGE) for cultural events programmes, touring ventures programmes and public art programmes, said Deputy Minister Rejoice Mabudafhasi.
She was joined by well-known artist Selaelo Selota and Phalaphala FM presenters in a workshop for artists in Vhembe at the Khoroni Hotel on Thursday.
“Our artists are confronted by a myriad of challenges, such as a lack of skills development, performance opportunities, piracy, less playtime on radio stations, lack of distribution deals
and lack of access to markets as well as inadequate marketing and equipment to produce quality work. I would like to encourage artists, songwriters, composers and producers to continue to promote and preserve indigenous languages, culture and heritage through music as we continue to enhance our national pride, nation building and social cohesion,” she added.
Ms Sharon Ravele of Phalaphala FM said they were doing all they could to promote Vhavenda artists.
“We do care for our local artists, but we urge them to produce quality music that can teach our communities for the better. One should understand that you have to sell yourself, so that the people might buy your work and support you financially,” Ravele said.
The guest speaker and legendary artist Selaelo Selota said artists should produce quality music with good messages to send to the communities.
