Phalaphala FM presenter Humbulani Nengovhela has received a second South African Traditional Music Awards (SATMA) nomination, this time in the Best Traditional Music SABC Radio Presenter of the Year category. The 18th SATMA awards ceremony is scheduled for December 15 in Durban.
Born in the rural village of Tshaulu outside Thohoyandou, Nengovhela was diagnosed with polio at the age of four, which affected his spinal cord and his walking ability. Despite this, he built self-confidence with family support, pursued education, worked as a councillor, and was a businessman before joining Phalaphala FM.
Known as "Muphirimia", he hosts the "Nambi ya Dzinambi" show, a traditional Tshivenda music programme, and the "Kharikonane" show on Phalaphala FM. Although nominated in 2022, he did not win.
Regarding the recent nomination, Nengovhela expressed humility, stating that being nominated for a second consecutive time affirmed that he was doing something right as a radio presenter. He remains optimistic about winning this year and emphasises the importance of support from his fans.
Launching the Muphirimia Foundation before the year ends, Nengovhela aims to create work projects for disabled people in the Vhembe region. He sees this as an opportunity to demonstrate that, with dedication and perseverance, disabled individuals can achieve remarkable feats.

One of the most popular Tshivenda music groups to have emerged from Vhembe, the Malisakholomo Band, impressed the audience with a live performance of their latest album during the Tshivenda Traditional Music Organisation (TTM Org) workshop. Comprised of three members, the band, founded in 2012, continues to make its presence felt in the entertainment world. The group released its seventh album, “Tsitsanwana”, in December last year.
As the world celebrated Mother’s Day, one of South Africa’s leading musicians, DJ Davic, openly expressed his undying love for his departed mother.
