Tshivenda traditional musician Peter Ramashia, better known as “Vho Peter R” from Hamagidi outside Thohoyandou, released his first EP, titled “Shangoni ri mabodasi”, in November.

Vho Peter R, aged 58, is a self-taught guitarist born and raised in Hamabunda near Tshififi. He later relocated to Hamagidi. Growing up, he listened to various artists, especially Vhavenda musicians, and began imitating them, aspiring to reach the ranks of Tshivenda traditional legends such as the Adziambei band, Alpheus Ramavhea, Elvis Mandiza, and others.

The EP comprises three tracks: “Shangoni ri mabodasi” (the title track), “Vhana vha zwino”, and “Shango lovhilingana”.

In discussing his new release, Vho Peter R expressed the hope that Tshivenda traditional music lovers would find good messages in his songs. He emphasised the themes of his music, stating, “I want my fans to be vigilant and watch out for what will happen here on earth.” The title track “Shangoni ri mabodasi” roughly translated to English conveys the message that people are temporary residents on earth, and one day, God will come to take them to heaven.

The lyrics of Vho Peter R’s songs address issues faced by teenagers, including unwanted pregnancies, alcohol and drug abuse, and a lack of respect for the elderly. Through his music, he aims to provide advice on becoming responsible citizens in the country. Vho Peter R encourages individuals engaged in criminal activities to stop and become responsible citizens with good morals.

All the songs on the EP were produced by Vho Peter and recorded by Rofhiwa Tshifhumulo, known as Ropa Bass, at his studio in Tshisaulu village.
