Gospel choir from Vleifontein unearths hidden talent

The Unity Gospel Choir from Vleifontein is making a significant impact in the community by creating a platform for undiscovered talented young local singers to find their voices.

Established in April 2022, Unity Gospel Choir boasts a membership of 47, mostly young individuals. By instilling the belief that life abounds in singing and praising God through gospel music, they aim to combat the destructive influence of drugs among the youth, and they have been successful in their mission, helping several individuals move away from negative influences such as teenage pregnancies.

“We are happy that we were empowered to explore the world of music. This also helps us refrain from being involved in drugs, alcohol, and teenage pregnancy as we are given something to do when we are free,” said one of their members, Shiluva Chauke.

Mr Ndouvhada Rembuluwani, the chairperson of Unity Gospel Choir, stated that talent often lay dormant until an individual had the good fortune to meet a support system that nurtured and acknowledged his/her ability. “The choir aims to be that facilitator for the youth, encouraging them to explore their musical gifts. This strategic approach ensures that the choir resonates with its target audience, creating a space where the youth can thrive and express themselves through music,” said Rembuluwani.

However, despite their commitment to making a positive impact, the choir faces financial challenges. “The high unemployment rate in the area poses a hurdle, making it difficult for some of the members, many of whom are learners relying on parental support, to contribute financially to events. Still, they do what they can, and there is a significant influence from them in the community,” he said.
