Renowned poet and musician Lutendo Mugagadeli, known by his stage name Vendaboy Poet, has once again come out guns blazing. On Saturday, 20 April, he left guests asking for more when he officially launched his latest traditional album, “Lutendo”.

His seventh traditional studio album was launched during the lobola-celebration ceremony of Ntakuseni and Phephiseni Tshikororo. The event took place at Muledane, Thohoyandou Block J. Vendaboy Poet, who doubled up as master of ceremonies and entertainer, kept the guests on their toes and in stitches.

According to Mugagadeli, his new album celebrates the diverse heritage of South Africa. “It presents a blend of African oral traditions with musical melodies, rhythm, and rhyme. The album, recorded under Crowd Jubilation Record label, contains 12 tracks wherein I featured some of the prominent artists in the music industry such as Motlanalo, Maleboo, Kashflow, JR Player, Rofhiwa Netwadzi, Eunice M, Nadia Vocals, Gerabeats, and Killerbeatz. I roped in ace producer Petmash for this project. The songs were arranged by Fizzy Toofab and myself as executive producer,” he said.

He added that he would continue preaching the gospel through his poems and music. “The album is aimed at teaching and preserving our culture and traditions. I embarked on this journey many years ago and will not give up,” he said.

Vendaboy is one of the few artists to have recited his work before President Cyril Ramaphosa twice. Last year, he had an eventful season as, besides performing for the president, he also performed at the BRICS Summit held in Sandton in August 2023. The cherry on top was when he was awarded one of the top 100 South African Shining Stars during a function held at the Sandton Gautrain Hotel on 13 December 2023.
