The guard of honour: members of the Limpopo MKVA parading before escorting the casket to the local cemetery.

MK veteran shot seven times at home

The family of a woman who was killed last Tuesday evening at Mavhunga village in Nzhelele have described the incident as the worst nightmare that has ever happened to them.

Ms Ntshavheni Sharon Masithulela (48) was shot seven times at her home in what the family is convinced was a planned murder. Masithulela was a member of the MK veterans (MKVA) in Limpopo and a member of the ANC.

Her son, Khangwelo, described the incident as "the worst traumatising experience" of his life. He said he was on his way home on the day of the incident. He told Limpopo Mirror last Thursday that he heard a gunshot at his home. Upon his arrival, he saw a man leaving his home. The unknown man was driving a white Volkswagen Golf 6 and left the scene swiftly.

According to reports, a man who was drinking alcohol at a local tavern that afternoon allegedly asked for directions to the deceased's home.

The deceased's nephew, Mr Mashudu Masithulela, said they could not rule out that it was a planned death.

Masithulela was laid to rest on Sunday. She is survived by her two children, Khangwelo and Bono.

At the time of her death, she was working at the local post office and she was the deputy chairperson of the ANC Tswime branch in Ward 32 of the Makhado local municipality.

According to Const Tsietsi Lamola from the Limpopo police media centre, investigations are continuing. No arrest has been made yet and the suspect is unknown, he said.

The chairperson of the ANC Tswime branch, Mr Phaswana, said they lost a humble and dedicated leader. He said every member of the organization was shocked. “I was so traumatised when I heard about the tragic incident. I did not believe it; we were robbed of a dedicated leader,” he said.

Ms Ntshavheni Sharon Masithulela was a member of the MKVA and the African National Congress.
