Five distinctions for modest Betty

Modest village girl Betty Nembulu (18) of Shanzha, where schools virtually have no resources, managed to get five distinctions in her Grade 12 examinations.

Nembulu became Nzhelele East Circuit’s best achiever after achieving distinctions in mathematics, life sciences, life orientation, Tshivenda and science. Her achievements did not go unnoticed as local traditional leader Chief Neckson Shavhani called for her, her family and community structures to come to his kraal.

“We have heard of the good work and achievements of this girl and felt that, as the leadership of the village, should lead by example and acknowledge her achievements. She made this village very proud and hoisted our flag very high, and we cannot pretend that nothing happened,” he said.
The local Sanco secretary, Ronald Masindi, said the girl had made them very proud. “We are going to popularise this initiative by our chief, so that more and more pupils can be motivated,” he said.

The girl’s mother, Ms Tshifhiwa Mukwevho, said she had no doubt that her daughter would make it in life. “She is a dedicated girl who needs no supervision and we know she will not disappoint,” she said. Betty told the chief that she had been admitted at Wits and was going to study bio-medical sciences.

“There is no magic in attaining the best results. I burnt the midnight oil, had morning studies, afternoon studies and also weekend sessions in order to achieve what I did,” she said.
