Musina Municipality to develop township at Mopane

The long-awaited establishment of a township in Mopane is now a reality. This was said by the mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Ramoyada, during her visit to the area on Sunday.

Mopane is a farming area, about 40km south of Musina and is in Ward 2 of the Musina Local Municipality.

Ramoyada told hundreds of community members at the local soccer field that "we are slowly winning the war against the shortage of shelter for our people in the farming areas." She mentioned that the fact that most of the land in the farming areas was privately owned limited their mandate of providing public services on some of the farms.

She said that the Mopane Township will comprise 1 012 sites. “The process of site demarcation has already been completed. Musina Local Municipality and Vhembe District Municipality are working together to make sure that there will be basic services such as roads, water and sanitation in the township." Of the 1 012 established sites, 986 will be residential, there will also be one business site, a clinic, municipal offices, nine open-space sites, a community centre, a crèche and a primary school.

Ramoyada said community members in the farming areas would be informed where to register for the sites. “We know that our people are in dire need of housing, but they should allow us to complete all the formal processes before we can call them upon to register for the sites.”

She emphasised that they were aware that, besides the challenges in relation to shelter, communities in the farming areas also encountered unemployment, stock theft, crime and lack of recreational facilities. "We are working with different stakeholders and government departments to make sure that those challenges are addressed."

She also announced that, through the Community Works Programme, the Musina Munisipality has employed 25 community members in Mopane "and we have also donated computers to farms schools to improve their lives."

Ms Maria Sebola is one of the farm workers who rents a shack on one of the local farms. She said that the establishment of a township in Mopane was a positive move towards a better life for the farming communities. "We really thank Musina Municipality for coming up with this life-changing initiative.”
