It’s not spam, it’s only the municipality

The Makhado Municipality is not spamming residents - they are in fact launching a new project.

As per public notice on 20 February, the municipality announced that they will engage with ratepayers by means of modern technology. Residents have, during the past two weeks, been flooded with MMS messages from the municipality, communicating their Green campaign.

Several residents, however, complained that their cell phone inboxes have been flooded with these messages, and wonder if they should ignore them as spam.

The municipality was approached for clarity. They explained this week that the project forms part of their marketing strategy for “revenue enhancement to inform customers on easier access.”

According to the municipality, they had become aware, over the years, that accounts sent via the post office were often delayed, and that they could not deal with the situation. “Many complaints were noted from customers, including ratepayers, that they do not get mail on time or that mail is lost,” said municipal spokesperson Mr Louis Bobodi on Monday in an email to the newspaper.

Bobodi explained that the MMS and SMS campaign should not be shunned as it will benefit all consumers. “Telecommunication technology is the most effective way to communicate important messages in this modern age,” said Bobodi. He further added that more than one SMS and MMS were sent out to serve as reminders to consumers about the project as the municipality felt that one would not serve this purpose.

Bobodi urged ratepayers to heed the call of the messages and ensure their contact details were updated on their municipal account. Accounts that are in arrears after a period of 60 days will be charged interest, as there will be no excuse of accounts not being received.
