Local law expert now a judge in Gauteng Division

A magistrate of the Gauteng Regional Court, Thifhelimbilu Phanuel Mudau of Tshisahulu, was recently elevated to a judge.

During an event at the 2Ten Hotel in Sibasa to celebrate his appointment, Mudau was told to make his court a place where both the victims and perpetrators can feel the presence of God. Mudau is now attached to the Gauteng division of the High Court.

Speaking during the ceremony, Archbishop Phelelani Nzunza, head of the Church of the Holy Ghost, said that he was not surprised that Mudau had been elevated to a judge. “We have seen his contribution in the church and community and his dedication to his work. We have seen his humility and he is not lost in his job as the judiciary goes hand in hand with the church in upholding moral standards," he said.

Nzunza urged Mudau to continue to be humble as that is the recipe that will help him carry out his task truthfully and with dedication.

In welcoming Mudau, the judge president of the Gauteng High Court, Justice Dunstan Mlambo, said he had been watching Mudau perform his duties with dedication. “We have seen his humility and respect, the way he greeted people. During the time he was acting judge, he dealt with cases - some of which were of interest to all - and we realised he was ready for the bench,” he said.

In response, Mudau said the quality of justice dispensed in the South African courts was primarily dependent upon the standard of basic legal training and the level of experience of court officials. "To this end, continuous legal training is not only necessary, but a must for those generally involved in the administration of justice and in particular judicial officers to improve their skills. It is for this reason that, since I graduated from law school in 1987, I have taken advantage to participate, and whenever called upon, organised various workshops and conferences in my field of work under the auspices of the Justice College and the Judicial Officers Association of South Africa." Mudau said he would continue to uphold juristic independence.

Justice Mudau studied for his law qualifications at the University of Venda and the Rand Afrikaans University. He joined the Department of Justice in 1987 and worked as a magistrate in Thohoyandou, as senior magistrate in Johannesburg and later as regional court magistrate in Randburg, Gauteng. He has acted as a judge of the High Court on a regular basis since 2012 until his permanent appointment at the Gauteng division with effect from 1 January 2016.
