Former newsman Matshavha dies

 

The family of former Phalaphala FM news reader, Vho-Pfuluwani Jonas Matshavha (65), who died on Sunday after a short illness, is devastated because "they have lost their pillar of strength".

Mr Matshavha was also known as Muthomphei.

A family spokesperson, Ms Takalani Matshavha, said that the family members were in great pain and saddened by his death. She said that the family was proud to have produced “one of the most valuable members of the community.” She added that Matshavha had played a big role in uplifting the standard of newsreading in Limpopo.

Matshavha is a former radio newsreader who started working for SABC radio when it was still called Radio Venda. A former school teacher, he joined the SABC in 1976. In 2004, he resigned as newsreader and went back home to Tshino.

A former colleque, Mr Makonde Mbedzi and the present manager of Makhado FM, said that Phalaphala FM was proud to have had someone like Matshavha. “He was a distinguished newsreader and always exemplary,” he said.

He added that Matshavha had been an asset to the industry and had been instrumental in many of the station's projects."He was a hard worker, who was dedicated to his work. He never complained when assigned a task. This is a great loss to the community," he said.

Matshavha is survived by his two wives and 13 children and will be buried at the Tshino graveyard tomorrow.
