“Encourage the people to be proud of their culture”

Hundreds of people gathered at the Makuleke soccer grounds last Saturday to celebrate Africa Day. The event was organized by the Department of Arts and Culture and the Minister of Communications, Ms Faith Muthabi, was the guest speaker.

Muthambi, who was dressed in traditional Tsonga attire, addressed the gathering in Xitsonga. She said that the government was happy that the community of Makuleke and other areas in Vhembe recognised Africa Day.  She said she was also happy to see people dressed in Tsonga and Venda traditional attire, which showed that they were proud of their culture.

"Gone are the days when people were mocked for wearing their traditional attire. There was time when a person wearing xibelane was regarded as a non-believer. But today we encourage our people to be proud of their culture and tradition," said Muthambi, adding that Africans must always be united and live as one.

Chief Mapai from Mozambique said he was also happy to be part of the event. He added that his presence confirmed that Africans were one. Mapai also encouraged Mozambican nationals who were in South Africa to respect the laws of the country.

Hosi Joas Makuleke, his wife Venus and other dignitaries were entertained with traditional dances from xigubu, tshikona, tshigombela and xifasi. Traditional meals such as thongolifha, majenje, matshitshu, xiendla hivomu, xingwimbi, tihove, vuswa va mbila, xiphswi, madonna and thophi were prepared and put on display as part of the celebrations.

Well-known traditional musicians Thomas Chauke, Zozo and Sengere Super Beat, Florah Nwa-Chauke and other local artists also entertained the guests during the event.
