Warm send-off for Thengwe’s top pupil

Thengwe Secondary School’s pupil Thendo Mudau (18), who, together with friends at the school, invented a cow-dung stove, became the darling for all during the village's academic excellence awards.

Mudau and his friends will represent the country in the Philippines next month after winning a global competition.

The awards held at the local Christ Ambassador’s Centre at Maniini at the weekend was attended by traditional leaders, an independent ward candidate, Ms Michael Rasikhinya, and the ward councillor, Ms Maria Ramanala.

During the event, Mudau received praises and was hailed as an exemplary pupil and an example that, with dedication, nothing is impossible. He received R2 000 from Chief Nkhodeni Mmbi of Tshiawelo Ha-Tshikonelowho, who said that the young man had made them very proud. “We are very excited to produce learners who become ambassadors of this country. That is why we are encouraging our learners to take their education seriously, so as to add value in the development of this country,” he said.

The coordinator of the awards, Mr Alugumi Makushu, an environmental affairs officer at Ekurhuleni Metro, said that the community should encourage learners in their area. “This event is our first attempt, but we hope from where we started this would grow to be an annual event where we would identify hardworking pupils in all the schools in the village."

Makushu further indicated that good results for Grade 12 ensured the pupils places at tertiary level and bursaries for studies.“Some of us did not have this opportunity, but we worked hard to be where we are today. Today's learners have everything at their disposal and there is no excuse for not succeeding,” added Makushu.

Dylan Maluleke, a Grade 12 learner at Thohoyandou Technical High, scooped the award as the best overall learner for getting distinctions in all his learning areas.

Chief John Mmbi urged everyone in the village to do their best and develop their village. "This place used to be known for bare-knuckle fighting, but times are changing. Not long ago we received a mobile library and this shows that we are on the right path. All of us should take education as a priority."

In response, Thendo Mudau urged his fellow learners to work very hard, saying there were plenty of opportunities in education.
