A former executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality, Cllr Florance Radzilani, is expected to be elected and sworn in as the new executive mayor of the Vhembe District.

Florence Radzilani to become new executive mayor of VDM

 

Florence Radzilani, a former executive mayor of the Vhembe District as well as the MEC for Safety, Security and Liaison, is expected to be elected and sworn in as the new executive mayor of Vhembe District Municipality later today (Friday).

She will replace Mr Tshitereke Matibe, whose five-year term recently expired.

The new Vhembe District Municipality (VDM) will hold its first council meeting today in the Vhembe Council Chamber. It will start at 14:00.

The VDM council has 24 seats and as in the case of other local municipalities, the African National Congress is the ruling party. The council consists of the ANC (19 seats), the EFF (3) and the DA with 2 seats. According to Mr Moss Shibambu, media liaison officer in the VDM, the local municipalities are also expected to send representatives to sit in the district council.

 “Thulamela Local Municipality has 13 seats, Makhado Municipality 11 seats, “LIM 345” has nine seats and Musina Municipality has two seats. The total number of seats in Vhembe District Council will be 59, including representatives from local municipalities. The council is expected to elect the Speaker, followed by the executive mayor and the Chief Whip. Members of the mayoral committee are also expected to be appointed during the session,” Shibambu said.
