Rialivhuwa Mulaudzi (17), a Grade 11 learner from Lwamondo High School, and Sally Marikhele, a Grade 10 student from Nngweni High School (15), were crowned king and queen of the Mr and Miss Vhembe District High Schools Pageant. The annual beauty pageant took place at the Tshavhalovhedzi Zion Apostolic Church on 6 April.

The king and queen walked away with R2,000 in cash. They will also receive three vouchers from different shops.

Marikhele expressed her desire to inspire young people to believe in themselves. “I want them to have confidence and not be ashamed of themselves. You must be confident if you want to achieve your goals in life,” Marikhele said.

After the crowning ceremony, Mulaudzi said he felt humbled to take home the crown. “I have worked hard and know I deserve it, and I will represent the people of Vhembe well wherever I go.”

The event organiser, Ms Zwonaka Makhado, said the goal of the event was to keep the youth of Vhembe off the streets. "If the youth are not kept busy, they may turn to drugs, alcohol, or unsafe sex. We want them to be responsible future leaders who will make meaningful contributions to their communities.”

She stated that a total of 40 participants, 23 girls and 17 boys, had taken part in the pageant.

“Participants were judged on self-confidence, general knowledge, their proposed contributions to community building, and leadership qualities. The winners performed exceptionally well, and we encourage those who did not win to participate again in the future. The youth should understand that this event is not only about winning but also about making contributions to their communities.”
