Wheelchair basketball team aims high

The Vhembe 12 Eagles wheelchair basketball team will participate in the Provincial Wheelchair Basketball Tournament for the Disabled, which will be held at the Seshego Stadium in Polokwane on Saturday, 20 April. They will be sending both male and female teams.

According to the team manager of the Vhembe 12 Eagles women's team, Mr Pfariso Rakonanani, the main aim of the tournament is to select a provincial squad that will represent Limpopo in the national wheelchair-basketball tournament to be held in Gauteng Province from 27 April to 2 May. The participating teams in the tournament are the Vhembe 12 Eagles, the Rhino Wheelchair Basketball team, and the Wolf Wheelchair Basketball team from Polokwane.

Rakonanani said they had approached many potential sponsors, but without success. He expressed disappointment that the corporate world is not interested in sponsoring sporting codes played by the disabled.

“We are struggling with wheelchairs at the moment. We don't have enough wheelchairs for practice purposes. It is very difficult for our players to adjust to using wheelchairs when they only use them during games, except for those who use them on a daily basis,” he said.
