“Rasta man, teacher man!” This is the reaction of the local reggae music maniacs when they greet their prolific musical hero, Kenny Wailer Murabi.
Dubbed the father of local reggae music, Murabi has won thousands of reggae music lover’s hearts since he ventured into the music industry more than 20 years ago. His unique style, which consists of heavy bass sounds, some chopping sounds and occasional well-positioned brass, has earned him great respect wherever he performs.
He recently left music lovers begging for more during his performances in Johannesburg and Burgersfort. He is finalizing preparations for his invitation to perform in Kingston, Jamaica later this year.
Murabi hails from Mianzwi village, north of Thohoyandou. Although he is a teacher by profession, he has just released his fourth album Ambani (speak out) which is being received with enthusiasm by reggae music lovers. “I fell in love with music at a very young age. I used to emulate my late brother, Joas, who used to sing for the Venda Northern Trumpets in the eighties. His famous composition Saulo Saulo U Ntovholelani gained great popularity and it was an instant hit with the then Radio Venda. I then made my own guitar, using an old oil tin, wood and fish line. And the rest is now history …”
The dreadlocked singer released his first album, Holly War, in 1999. Holly War was then followed by Tsha ri vhone and Tshikhokhonono which were released in 2005 and 2013 respectively.
His new album, Ambani is a true reflection of what musical intelligence, creativity and originality are all about. Besides the title track, the album boasts sweet reggae music songs like No vhonwa, Mihumbulo Mituku, Muthu Navigator, Africa Dub and Kha ri mu rende. Ambani, No Vhonwa, Mihumbulo Mituku, Muthu and Navigator were also played on mature bud versions as bonus tracks.
All the songs were recorded at Deep Roots Studios and marketed by Kenny Murabi Music.
Murabi says since the release of his album two weeks ago, his diary is full of bookings for performances as his fans want to see his unique musical talent live on stage. “I perform all my shows live and that is why people never get tired of watching me on stage. I do a lot of rehearsals to make sure that my fans get the same quality of music that they get from my CDs.”
