Musina Municipality pledges support to the arts

The mayor of the Musina Municipality, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope, remains firm in the belief that arts and culture will continue to promote social cohesion, nation building and the enrichment of socio-economic development.

She was addressing a group of local artists who met her at the municipal offices a fortnight ago.

She said that her municipality would continue to discover, develop and encourage local talent for the enhancement of arts and culture. “I respect artists with the highest honour. That is why I decided to put everything aside to come and meet you here today. Arts and culture are important because they preserve our heritage. They give a medium for artistic expression and also provide a platform for our people to display their talents.”

Muhlope added that the municipality saw arts and culture as a mixture of the region's rich history and identity in today’s changing world. “We have long supported artistic endeavors that aim to inspire this type of change. Every year, we host the Musina Annual Show and this is the platform where our local artists must shine. The show also assists us to nurture local talent and to preserve our rich artistic heritage. We will continue to use arts and culture as critical vehicles for consolidating the rich culture and heritage of our people.”

Oby Nkanyane, a well-known local gospel artist, also attended the meeting. “We thank the mayor for squeezing us into her schedule to deliberate on issues pertaining to arts and culture. We become very encouraged when we know that we have full support from the local leaders. As local artists, we will continue to strive for unity while, at the same time, informing, entertaining and educating our masses.”

Nkanyane’s sentiments were echoed by reggae artist Rekkie Moyo, who added: “We are destined to take arts and culture to another level with the support from our municipality. Unity is the only weapon that will pave the way for our prosperity.”
