Tshilidzi Mukoma (36) of Ha- Rabali village has proved to many people that laziness never helps anybody but only brings misery and poverty. Mukoma is slowly but surely making a name for himself in the fashion industry. He is a designer and manufacturer of footwear (tekkies) in Pretoria, where he sells his products directly to shops and the public.
“I started from nothing in a rural setting, and what I have observed here is that there is a lot of talent. If these industries could be revitalized, many job opportunities could be created,” said Mukoma.
“Working on my designs and the manufacturing of footwear are kind of spiritual to me,” he said. “I approach this work of mine with great passion and love. I believe that my passion has helped me open my own company, Ekhaya Investment, where we specialise in footwear designs to suit the client's requirements.”
He urged other young people to use the opportunity that was given to them by God. “You have the whole world at your fingertips. The future is determined by yourselves, and I urge you all to go out and make a meaningful contribution in your communities by creating jobs for yourselves and others,” he said.
He explained that he was doing the marketing himself. “Everywhere I go, I have my own catalogue with most of my designs. I encourage the youth to have a piece of this cake as there are opportunities in this field,” he said.
He believes the most interesting aspect about fashion is the subjectivity and that there are many similar items, but crafting your product in a unique and different way will absolutely help your brand stand out.
He explained that most designers are female, but this fact did not deter him. “We can all be somebody, regardless of gender, age or race. I aim to please and give the unexpected,” he said.
“Through my designs I see myself achieving more and maturing in the fashion industry,” he said. He was also realistic about the fact that the industry is a difficult one to survive in financially.
