Gospel singer Newie won the Best Gospel Song of the Year award at the Limpopo Gospel Music Awards (LIGMA) held at Sun Meropa Hotel on Saturday. She received the award for her song Vha murena wa marena.

Newie managed to beat Dr Tehillah, Dzunisani, Lufuno Phalanndwa, and Muhluri Baloyi.

She said that she felt grateful for winning this prestigious award. "I feel very excited, overwhelmed and honoured to have won this award. I appreciate the LIGMAs and all their sponsors for hosting this beautiful ceremony," she added.

"I thank everyone who voted for me and this is your award. I saw my supporters holding hands together, voting left and right, sending airtime just for me to bring back this award, so it belongs to them."

She already has five albums under her belt: For your Love, Ngangoho vha Murena, U Mudzimu E Ethe, No other God but you, and Vha Murena wa marena. "Expect a lot of quality music and live performances going forward," she said.

She said that her love of gospel music began when she was still in Sunday school in the Apostolic Faith Mission Assembly in Vleyfontein, “and that itself just makes gospel music part of my life”.

LIGMA is a strategic platform designed to stimulate competition and reward excellence when it comes to gospel music in the province. Through this initiative, it intends to contribute towards the sustainable growth and development of local gospel music for many decades to come.
