Pfuramathupho nominated for Book Behind Awards

Read: 1603

A novel written in Tshivenda by a relatively new author, Ms Phathutshedzo Netshivhulani, continues to make ripples in literary circles.

Pfuramathupho, the debut offering by Netshivhulani, was published in 2020 but, due to demand from international readers, was translated into English in 2021. The novel has now been nominated for the Best Tshivenda Book at The Book Behind Awards ceremony. The prestigious event will take place on 9 November in Pietermaritzburg.

Netshivhulani’s novel quickly became a phenomenal success, with a demand from readers in countries such as China. It also received rave reviews from critics.

The young author described the latest award nomination as fantastic news. “I am honoured to be considered among such talented authors. It feels surreal to see my work recognised on such a grand stage,” she said.

Netshivhulani explained that Pfuramathupho is a deeply personal story. She felt humbled by the way it resonated with so many readers. “This nomination is not just a milestone in my career but a validation of the hard work and passion I have poured into my writing. It inspires me to continue sharing stories that matter and to uplift the voices of my community,” she said.

The novel is a narrative about the university experience of the main character, Thambulo, reflecting the emotional and challenging transition from high school to university life. It discusses critical issues such as gender-based violence in higher-learning institutions and provides insights into the various forms of abuse students encounter and how to avoid them.

The Book Behind Awards celebrate outstanding achievements in literature across various genres and languages. These awards aim to recognize and promote literary excellence, bringing attention to authors whose work makes a significant impact on readers and society. “Being nominated for such a distinguished award is a testament to the power and relevance of our stories. I would be very grateful for all the support on this journey,” she said.
