IRC candidate Mr Khakhathi Tshisikule.
Reggae artist Khakhathi Tshisikule has thanked his supporters for helping his party to secure a seat in the Thulamela Local Municipality.
The International Revelation Congress (IRC) has secured one Proportional Representation (PR) seat in Thulamela, following last week’s local government elections.
Khakhathi, of Khakhathi & Friends fame and spokesperson and Public Relations Officer for the IRC, said he was happy that his party had managed to secure the one seat after a campaign of only three months. "People proved once more that they like my thinking and ideas. Because of time, we only managed to cover about 15% of Vhembe during our campaign. We have also managed to recruit more than 10 000 people to become card-carrying members for our party,” he said.
He also revealed that, after a meeting with the IRC leader, Mr Thinawanga Mammba, it was agreed that Mr Baldwin Ramulifho would represent the party in Thulamela, while Khakhathi would continue with his work running campaigns to lobby more membership.
The IRC was competing in 21 of the 41 wards in Thulamela. The ANC obtained 79.1% (64 seats of the 81 seats in the council), followed by the EFF with 8, the DA with 4, the PAC with 2 and the ACDP and IRC with one seat each.
"To our supporters, we are still going to meet at many events to popularize the IRC while we will be trying to get membership. After four weeks' rest, we will be recruiting everywhere. Our target is that we must secure seats in the provincial and national legislature," said Khakhathi.
