Tshilwavhusiku to represent SA in Special Olympics

The floor-hockey team of the Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani Special School expressed joy when they were given a send-off on Friday. The team will represent South Africa during the Special Olympics scheduled to take place from 14 to 25 March in Austria.

Different stakeholders attended the event. They included representatives of the Limpopo MEC for the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture, Makhado Municipality’s mayor Cllr Shonisani Sinyosi, the office of the Vhembe District Municipality and Special Olympics South Africa.

Special Olympics South Africa’s CEO, Ms Ancilla Smith, lauded the school’s management and team coach for playing a vital role in making sure that the floor-hockey team from Tshilwavhusiku Razwimisani proceed to the Special Olympics 2017.

“This team is not only going to represent the school, but the country as a whole,” Smith said. “Special Olympics South Africa is so proud of this school’s achievement and we hope for good results at the Special Olympics games.”

Limpopo MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture, Ms Onica Moloi, said that they would give the team all the required assistance to make sure that the team’s stay in Austria was good and enjoyable. “This is the team that is making the district, province and country proud,” she said. “Sport is an equaliser in that a team from rural Limpopo can still beat a team from America, which has all the sports amenities. Having said that, it doesn’t mean that we have to ignore building and offering conducive sport facilities for our children, so that they can be the best athletes in the world.”

The Makhado Municipality’s mayor, Cllr Shonisani Sinyosi, handed R10 000 as a gift for the team. She said that the municipality was proud of the team’s initial success. “We are looking forward to giving you a hero’s welcome,” she said.
