Young woman killed at Biaba

The killing of a young woman at Biaba last Friday caused different structures to call for an end to violence in the area. Ms Zwidofhelangani Sithuu (23) was hit with a stone to death.

According to bystanders, two men were seen fighting in the street and the deceased tried to intervene. One of the two men allegedly turned on her and hit her with a stone. People rushed to the scene to find the young woman lying on the ground.

It is said that the two men and the woman were seen earlier that day drinking at a shebeen, which they left together.

According to the mother of the deceased, Ms Evelyn Sithuu, who rushed to the scene, there was a big stone covered in blood near her daughter’s body. “Her head was bleeding from a gaping, fresh wound.” She added that they were very traumatised and could not understand why somebody had killed her.

She described her as a good friend and a daughter to everyone in the village. “She was a darling to us all,” she said, shaking her head. “I can't understand that she's no more. I was shocked and left traumatised to think that she may have been killed by a man who is known to us.”

The spokesperson for the Mphephu police, W/O Lazarus Netshidzati, confirmed the incident and said that a suspect had been arrested. Thabelo Nembambula (28) appeared in the Mphephu Magistrate's Court on Monday. His case was postponed to 12 June for a bail application and further investigations. He was released on bail last Wednesday in an unrelated case of common robbery.

Ms Sithuu is survived by her son, mother and grandmother. She will be buried at Rabali cemetery on Sunday morning.
