The councillor for Ward 22 in the Thulamela Municipality, Ms Thembani Shitiba, has praised the elderly in her ward for the initiative they have taken in looking after their health.

The hands-on councillor also urged the elderly to continue doing exercises as a way of fighting the scourge of lifestyle diseases. She was speaking at an event hosted by the Pfanani Old Age Society at the Phindula Sports Ground last Wednesday.

During the event, the members of the society engaged in exercises and participated in soccer games. They have a big team, which they divided into two, Pirates and Chiefs, for the sake of competition. Traditional dances were also performed. Among the spectators were the local traditional leader, community leaders and many community members.

The coordinator of the group, Mr Phineas Nethengwe, said as elderly they organized themselves out of boredom. "As elderly people, we feel alienated and sometimes we feel we are on our own. When we are together, we share our challenges in life.”

A participant, Ms Bernice Mudau of Ngovhela, said the exercises they did on a weekly basis had become their clinic. "Most of us had diseases that have to do with our lifestyles and we were regular visitors to the clinics. Since we started, the playground has become our new clinic and our medication, " she said.

Cllr Shitiba, who spent the day with the elderly, commended their initiative. "Our elderly are being troubled by lifestyle diseases that could be beaten and done away with through exercising. We encourage all in the community to take their cue from the elderly and exercise for good health," she said.
