For almost 10 years the rural village of Mafhohoni near Tshamulungwi in Mutale was without a traditional leader. Things changed on Saturday, however, when the new traditional leader to steer the village in the right direction was installed.

Chief Ladzani Nemafhohoni (59) is the new chief of Mafhohoni village.

Family representative Mr Avhapfani Nemafhoni said that Chief Nemafhohoni succeeded his late father, Chief Thambatshira Nemafhohoni, who passed away in 2008.

According to Nemafhohoni, the clan was always squabbling about who was to succeed the late chief. The solution came after the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs in Limpopo had appointed a commission to probe the disputes and claims relating to traditional leadership in the province. The Kgatla Commission ruled in favour of Nndaganeni Ladzani Nemafhohoni as the rightful heir to the throne of the Nemafhohoni chieftainship.

During the installation ceremony, which was held at the chief’s kraal, Mr Thomas Nemafhohoni was selected as ndumi, while Ms Azwifaneli Nemafhohoni was declared khadzi. The tshikona dance, which is danced when a new traditional leader is installed, was part of the proceedings during the ceremony.

Representing Thovhele Ratshibvumo II Rambuda, Chief Rembuluwani Nduvheni urged the new leader to steer his village in the right direction, so that the villagers will get better services.

“As new chief of the area, you are urged to take full responsibility for the communities under you and you must treat them with respect,” Nduvheni said. He added that he expected the communities in Makokoleni to give the new headman the needed support during his tenure as the traditional leader of the area.
