Police searching for five suspected robbers

The Makhado Police are currently searching for five suspects who have fled following a high-speed car chase.

According to the local police spokesperson, Const Irene Radzilane, the police received a tip-off that the five suspects were intending to go to Nzhelele to rob a local business.

A trap was set for the five, to catch them as they entered Louis Trichardt.

According to reports, the robbers, who travelled in a silver Toyota Corolla, entered Louis Trichardt from Polokwane’s direction. They, however, spotted the police and drove off at a high speed.

The robbers chose the Levubu road to try and escape, with the police and members of the Soutpansberg Town Watch in pursuit.

In their hurry to evade an arrest, the robbers decided to overtake a truck by passing it on the left-hand side on the shoulder of the road. This decision brought the robbers’ vehicle to a grinding halt after they crashed into the left side of the truck’s cabin.

The robbers abandoned their vehicle and headed towards a nearby business, Gerhard Grasdakke’s open gate, disappearing into the dense bushes.

Inside the vehicle, the police’s investigation team seized a cool box in which they found two 9mm pistols with the registration numbers filed off, ammunition, a balaclava and two pairs of gloves.

The police are also investigating the possibility that the car that the suspects used, might have been stolen.

By 12:00 the police’s K9 unit, supported by a police helicopter as well as members of the town and local farm watch, were still searching for the suspects.

A police helicopter could be seen on Friday (15 September) searching for five suspected robbers.
