Pastor Phineas Sithole greets Musina Mayor Mihloti Muhlope during her visit to the Musina Full Gospel Church.

“No woman or child deserves to be abused” - Mayor Muhlope

The mayor of Musina, Cllr Mihloti Muhlope, said the government needed the support of the church to fight the scourge of HIV/AIDS. Muhlope was addressing congregants at Musina Full Gospel Church last Sunday.

“You will understand that World Aids Day is commemorated on 1 December each year. We urge community members to commemorate this day every day of their lives. This will increase awareness and thereby lower the number of the people who are losing their lives through preventable diseases. As government, we encourage strong community participation and involvement, so that we can build a healthy nation.”

Muhlope added that the government was doing everything possible to bring accessible health care to the public.  “Let us always make sure that we visit our nearest health facilities for regular health screenings and testing. To our young people, we encourage them to delay sexual activities until marriage. In any new relationship, be sure of your HIV status and be faithful to your partner. If you are not sure of your partner’s HIV status, it is advisable to use condoms each time you have sex.”

She advised those who find themselves as victims of rape to make sure that they visit their nearest health facility within 72 hours. “If you find yourself being HIV positive, don’t be ashamed to take your medication, so that you can prolong your life. If on treatment, take the medication regularly as prescribed by a nurse or doctor. Another thing to remember is not to share your prescribed medication with anyone. Encourage them to visit their nearest health-care facility for their own medication.”

She took the opportunity to condemn men who take advantage of defenceless women and children. “No woman or girl child deserves to be sexually abused. Any sexual abuse activity should be reported to the police, so that the culprits can be brought to book. Men who abuse women and children deserve to be locked in jail for the rest of their lives.”
