Traditional leaders and members of the Ha-Tshivhase communities will no longer have to discuss serious developmental and service-delivery issues at the old, dilapidated offices. This is thanks to the Limpopo Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs (COGHSTA) who built them new, state-of-the-art offices.

The new Tshivhase Traditional Offices in Mukumbani outside Thohoyandou were officially opened by the executive mayor of Vhembe, Dowelani Nenguda, last Friday (4th). The building will serve as a one-stop centre where communities around Ha-Tshivhase will receive government-related services, such as an office for the Department of Home Affairs, a mini post office, a satellite police station, as well as a small tribal court – all under one roof.

Nenguda, who represented the MEC for COGHSTA, Basikopo Makamu, said that in his opening address of the Sixth Limpopo Provincial Legislature in 2019, Premier Chupu Mathabatha had called for the provision of offices for traditional authorities, so that they could discharge their duties in comfort and dignity.

“With the recognition of the institution of traditional leadership, in line with Chapter 12 of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa, the function is to support them. We can never run away from this duty and a recognition of our beings as African people, by ensuring that traditional leaders are catered for adequately. For some years, traditional leadership has raised concerns about the need for enabling tools of trade for the effective and efficient functioning of this important institution and, to date, COGHSTA constructed and completed numerous traditional council offices,” Nenguda said.

According to him, the handing over of these offices was a step forward in meeting all the needs and support of traditional leaders and communities. He urged Thovhele Midiyavhathu Tshivhase to make sure that the facility was put to good use, so that it served the community better.

In a message of support, the chairperson of the Limpopo House of Traditional Leaders, Kgoshi Solomon Dikgale, said that they were very thankful that traditional leaders and communities would have a better place to access government services. He urged them to take care of the offices and not to vandalize them, regardless of the quality of service delivery.

Thovhele Midiyavhathu Tshivhase said that he had been over the moon when he had heard that the government supported the institution of traditional leaders by building new, state-of-the-art buildings and offices. He said this would help his communities who, before now, had to travel far to access government services.
