Gospel singer Avhatakali Molovhele passes away

“I cannot imagine how life would be without you. Life will be so dull in your absence.” So says famous local musician Mariana Motlare, the best friend of the deceased local gospel sensation, Avhatakali Malovhele. Malovhele (48) died last week after falling ill. She was buried at her home village of Phiphidi, near Thohoyandou, last Saturday.

Motlare said she would always cherish the good moments she had shared with her friend. “I have lost a good friend who was always there whenever I needed her. She was a very energetic musician who would not sacrifice her music career for anything else. We used to travel together to perform in various places, and she would mesmerize music lovers with her sweet voice and unique dance moves. Death has indeed made us poorer because we have lost a great music ambassador.”

Record label owner and producer Tovhowani “DJ Godzilla” Muleya worked with the late Malovhele in his studio. He said: “She was a unique artist who never imitated anyone. Her music was very touching because she sang gospel music that was based on what was happening in real life. She was also easy to work with because she understood music very well and she strived for perfection in all her songs. Her death is a terrible blow to the local gospel music fraternity.”

The chairperson of the Vhembe District Music Association, Dr Roxley Masevhe, said he had learnt of Malovhele’s death with shock. “We are heartbroken because she was one of the most gifted gospel music artists around. The fact that we are also losing talented artists in a very short space of time also pains us a lot. However, we thank the Lord for blessing us with her life. She might be gone ,but her music will remain with us forever. May her soul rest in peace.”

Malovhele’s daughter, Elekanyani Malovhele, said her mother meant everything to her. “It is very difficult for us to accept that my mother is gone, and we will never see her again. We will always remember her for her kindness, love, and undying passion of music. Although she was ill, we thought she would recover and come back home to be with us again. Unfortunately, she succumbed to her illness and it broke our hearts. She was our pillar of strength, and life will now be totally different without her.”
