Sekelani Isaac Ndou from Musina hosted a successful 5km Walk or Run event on Saturday to raise awareness on drug abuse.

“Join challenge against drug abuse” - Ndou

Sekelani Isaac Ndou is challenging the Musina Local Municipality, the Musina police, local businesspeople, non-government organisations (NGOs) and the whole community to come on board in the fight against drug abuse in Musina.

The 27-year-old Ndou hosted a successful 5km colourful Walk or Run event on Saturday (1 May), which was attended by more than 40 (mostly young) supporters from Musina, to raise awareness on drug abuse. The Walk or Run started at Musina Mall and ended at the Renaissance High School.

The plan was to host a three-day event, starting with the Walk or Run on the Saturday and then continue the next day (2 May) with identifying known drug addicts and/or drug dealers in town. The initial plan was to end the event on 3 May with counselling, but the police would not authorise it, so the second day ensued with a peaceful demonstration from Musina Mall to Zanzibar Pub and Grill, again attended by around 40 supporters.

Ndou believes that this event signified the official start of the fight against the drug epidemic in Musina. He stands as the sole organiser of the event and said he sincerely appreciated the generosity of Khodani Magwira, Makotsi Patience Ngqaba, Victor Manavhela and Cllr Rendani Carlton Netshivhulana, who all supported the event with bottles of water.

“The event went well, and I am pleased with the attendance of the youths. The message of the Walk or Run event was very clear and unapologetic - that the fight against drug abuse has started and that we are not going to stop,” said Ndou.

Ndou had been informed of prevalent drug abuse in Musina and is worried that, if the situation is not challenged, Musina may lose an entire generation because of this scourge. He said that some of the drugs in circulation apparently acted as a sex booster and might lead to immorality and unprotected sex, resulting in the contracting of more fatal diseases and unwanted pregnancies.
