A festival of free movies in Vhembe

For those Vhembe residents who still have no plans for entertainment this December we have some good news. Dambuwo TV, an independent motion-picture production house, is hosting a free Limpopo movie-screening festival.

The festival kickstarts at the Makwarela community hall on 22 December. On 23 December, the movies will be on show at Waterval Full Gospel Church, and on 24 and 31 December, they can be seen at the Thohoyandou Arts Centre. On 27 December, movie buffs can gather at the Tshilamba Community Hall, a day later at the Malamulele Community Hall and on 30 December the Thohoyandou library hall will be the place to be.

The following films will be screened: Man in Crisis, Poor Sam, Tsutsuma, In a Heartbeat, and a preview of Schoolboy/Heavy Night.

Director of the movies Mr Shadrack Mphaphuli says the idea behind the festival is to create a culture in Limpopo where people will be able to go to mobile cinemas and enjoy watching movies.  “These movies are original Limpopo stories that have a massive appeal to a local audience as they see themselves in them and places they know, the culture they identify with, and their very own local-born stars on the big screen. What a way to inspire a new generation of filmmakers!”

He said the actors would also be interacting with the audience during the screening. “We plan to take the cinema to the people, from big cities to the rural villages,” added Mphaphuli.

Some of the well-known actors that are featured in the movies are Lesley Musina, Millicent Makhado, Mulalo Mudau, Israel Makoe, Mukundi Mphaphuli, Gabriel Temudzani, Mpho Sebeng, Hebron Sigwavhulimu, the late Mutodi Neshehe, Mogau Motlhatswi, Slindile Nodangala, and Fezile Makhanya. Newcomers to the acting world include Amanda Ntlonze, Ntsako Ngobeni and Dakalo Mudau.
