Foundation launched in honour of Dr Tshenuwani Farisani

The Dr Tshenuwani Farisani Development Foundation was launched on Saturday, September 10. The occasion coincided with Dr Farisani’s 75th birthday celebration, which was held at the Lutheran Church of South Africa’s conference centre in Thohoyandou Block F.

According to one of the organisers of the event, Mr Kenny Mathivha, they wanted to celebrate the life of Dr Farisani and honour him while he was still alive. The birthday celebration was attended by his family, wife and children, relatives, friends, and people from different political parties.

The list of guests included traditional leaders such as Thovhele Vho-Kennedy Midiyavhathu Tshivhase and Thovhele Gole Musiiwa Mphaphuli; SACP General Secretary Solly Mapaila (who was the main speaker); Dr Farisani’s former classmates at Mphaphuli; Judge Joe Raulinga and Judge Tshifhiwa Maumela; Muvhango producer Duma ka Ndlovu; Dr Gogome Tshifularo; Dr Zwo Nevhutalu; Dr Thivhilaeli Nedohe; Dr Ntavhanyeni Phaswana; MEC Mavhungu Luruli Ramakhanya; Vhembe ANC Chairperson Tshitereke Matibe; Vhembe Executive Mayor Dowelani Nenguda; Phalaphala FM programme manager Sharon Ravele and many more.

Mathivha said the idea of launching a foundation came after they realised that Dr Farisani, a former provincial MEC and member of parliament, was still using his own money to support needy families and funding educational needs.

“We realised that it was important to start a foundation that will take over and ease the burden, as he is doing everything on his own,” he said.

Dr Bernard Nthambeleni, the vice-rector of the University of Venda, confirmed that a committee was looking into a proposal that was submitted to honour Dr Farisani with a degree in appreciation of the contribution he made in the fight for freedom in the country.
