Siyabonga Nomvethe leads the pack

Amazulu might be in the eighth position in the NFD log standings, but they have someone to be proud of. The team’s killer striker, Siyabonga Nomvethe, is currently the league’s top goal scorer.

Nomvethe scored 11 goals in the 19 matches the team played to date. Born in Kwa-Mashu outside Durban 40 years ago, Nomvethe scored a brace when his side played to a 2-2 draw with Real Kings at the Princess Magogo Stadium last Sunday.

Nomvethe, or Belle as he is also known, is the oldest player in the league. The other close contenders for the top goal scorer award are Clifford Mulenga of Mbombela United and Mhlengi Cele of Thanda Royal Zulu. Mulenga and Cele have scored nine goals each. Sedwyn George of Royal Eagles has scored eight goals to date.

Sedwyn’s team mate, Raymond Monama, is also contesting for the award. Monama, who played for Black Leopards and Mamelodi Sundowns before joining the Pietermaritzburg side, found the net seven times this season. Two players, Bongile Booi of Milano United and Mazwi Mncube of Mthatha Bucks, have each scored six goals to date.

Bongile Booi scored his team’s opening goal when his side, Milano United, beat Royal Eagles 2-0 at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town last Sunday. On the other hand, Mazwi Mncube scored the second goal for Mthatha Bucks when they beat Magezi FC 3-2 at the Mthatha Stadium last Saturday. Joshua Souls of Witbank Spurs and Sakhile Maela of Thanda Royal Zulu have scored five goals apiece.

The players who have scored four goals so far are: Bongani Ndlovu and Siyabonga Madikane (Mbombela United), Mwape Musonda and Morgan Shivambu (Black Leopards), Ranga Chivaviro and Andile Khumalo (FC Cape Town), Chileshe Kangwa (Mthatha Bucks), Letsie Koapeng and Muhamad Patel (Stellenbosch FC) and Ryan Chapman (University of Pretoria).
