Ugly scenes at MTG soccer match

The MTG and PIB KO competition final game between Tshandama Try Together and Lukalo Hotspurs that was played at the Makonde Home Defenders grounds last Friday was characterized by some ugly scenes.

Hotspurs were the first to knock on their opposition's door. Their overlapping centre back, Shonisani Mapholi, was unfortunate in the ninth minute.

He forced his way through the defence of Try Together and unleashed a volley from inside the box. The ball missed the target by inches, much to the disappointment of the team’s fans. Tshandama replaced Phumudzo Mudau with Kenny Maedza nine minutes towards the end of the first half.

The only change Hotspurs made to their original squad was when they introduced Mutshidzi Munyai for Hlulani Chauke in the 54th minute.

The game came to a halt for about nine minutes as the fans of the two teams started to fight over the alleged planting of muti behind the goal posts. The situation returned to normal and the game continued as if nothing had happened. Chaos erupted again towards the end of the game as the fans assaulted one another with various objects, including stones and empty beer bottles. Again, the situation returned to normal and the game continued.

A player of Tshandama ignored the referee’s whistle and shot at goal shortly after the final whistle. That was followed by a heated argument between the players of Tshandama and the referee, Mr Tsumbedzo Ndwammbi.

The players argued that the goal was legitimate while the referee maintained that it had been scored after he had blown the final whistle. The players finally succumbed and the winner was determined through penalty shoot-out as the final score was still 0-0.

Hotspurs scored four while Tshandama managed to convert only one. The players and fans of Tshandama ran amok after Hotspurs had taken the winning penalty. They went straight to the referee and started to assault him with various objects, accusing him of favouritism.
