Haggai Combined School from Thohoyandou will participate in the national Danone U/12 finals at the WJ Clement Stadium in Boksburg on Saturday.

The nine provincial champions will be in action.

The coach of Haggai Combined School, Mr Justice Matloga, said that he was happy with the unity in his team. “The boys are doing their best and we have a good understanding.” He said it was the aim of the team to use the tournament as a stepping stone to the world championship.

He believes his school has an advantage, because they have hostels and the players live on the school premises. “Since winning our provincials, we have been focusing on training. We want the team to come to the nationals prepared to the maximum,” he added.

Matloga further said the team had received tremendous support from the principal and teachers. “Just getting to the national finals has made a difference to the boys in terms of confidence and motivation.”

The president of SASFA in Limpopo, Mr Hulisani Mabasa, congratulated the team and said that the importance of sports in the lives of young people was valuable “and goes much further than the basic answer that it keeps them off the streets.”

He said sports provided many positive opportunities for the community, especially school children. “Good sportsmanship provides guidelines that can be used in the classroom. It also teaches children to function in a competitive society.”

The participating schools are: Isaacs Primary (Eastern Cape), Phaphama Intermediate (Free State), Mophela Primary (KwaZulu-Natal), Sekhulile Primary (Mpumalanga), Mmamitlwa Primary (North West), Bankara Bodulong Intermediate (Northern Cape), Idasvallei Primary (Western Cape), Auckornpark Primary (Gauteng) and Haggai Combined (Limpopo).
