Inter-municipal employment tournament launched

Sanlam’s Key Account Specialist in Limpopo, Ms Janine Smith, said promoting a healthy lifestyle, fostering active community involvement and creating a social platform for various stakeholders were key issues of their social-responsibility plans.

She was addressing members of the Musina Municipal Sports Committee during the launch of the Inter-Municipal Employee Tournament (IMET) last week. The two parties also signed a memorandum of understanding during the meeting.

Smith said Sanlam would wholly sponsor the inaugural IMET games that will take place at the Lesley Manyathela Stadium on Saturday 24 March. The participating municipalities are Musina, Makhado and Blouberg. They will fight for supremacy in soccer, netball, volleyball, pool, table tennis, angling, darts, lawn tennis and tug of war. All participating sporting codes will be provided with sports regalia sponsored by Sanlam. Prizes will also include trophies, gold, silver and bronze medals.

She said IMET would be an annual tournament, to be hosted on a rotational basis by the identified municipalities. “The tournament will assist the municipalities to prepare themselves for their provincial and national games. We feel very proud to be associated with the municipalities in the form of sports development. We have no doubt that our involvement will play a meaningful role in staff wellness and productivity at the workplace.”

Cllr Prince Sakala, who was also part of the launch, commended Sanlam for coming on board. “As a service-delivery agent, the municipality cannot afford to finance everything, and we are happy to have partners who are there to assist. We are also happy that this will be an annual tournament and we commit to give our full support to make it a success.”

Sakala’s sentiments were echoed by Bennie Tlou, the chairperson of Musina Municipality’s Sports Committee.  “We are pleased to be associated with the sponsor, because they will help in addressing some of the financial challenges we have. We will gladly cooperate with them as per the memorandum of understanding to build this tournament into a formidable brand.”
