Huge defeat for Lim U/21 in national championships

Gauteng hammered the high-riding Limpopo 8-1 in the loser’s final of the SAB National U/21 championship at the Zwelithini Stadium in Durban on Sunday.

Gauteng showed a spirit of commitment from the onset, with their midfielders creating chances for their striking force. Duncan Mohale of Limpopo received a well-cooked pass from Andy Phathudi but hesitated for too long until one of the defenders of Gauteng poached the ball.

Gauteng squandered an opportunity in the seventh minute when Philip Moerane shot aimlessly from the goal mouth. Kenny Mofokeng committed a similar blunder a few moments later.

Katlego Ramonyai of Gauteng opened the scoring after he beat several defenders. Gauteng added another goal when Gift Radebe then hit the back of the net. Ramonyai increased the margin from the 18m area in the 33rd minute, making the half-time score was 3-0 in favour of Gauteng.

In the second half, Gauteng's goalkeeper made countless breath-taking saves, bringing stability to his team. In the 76th minute, Sizwe Skhosana of Gauteng received a pass from the centre line. He pretended that he wanted to dish out a pass to the advancing Bongani Masina, but kept the ball, beat the defence and released a hard shot into the net. Mixo Makhubele then scored the only goal for Limpopo.

Duncan Mohale of Limpopo was reprimanded in the 78th minute. He tackled Karabo Galesiwe from behind and the referee was lenient enough to let him go with a yellow card. Vusi Nkambule completed his brace and scored the fifth goal of his team.

The last three goals of Gauteng were scored in quick session by Tebogo Dintoe, Hope Sidane and Lunga Tshabalala.

The combined squad of the universities of South Africa won the event, when they beat Mpumalanga in the final.
