Chippas and Stars share the spoils

In their Vhembe derby in the Sasol Women’s League at the Makhuvha Stadium on Sunday, Chippas United Ladies held the league title contenders, Shayandima Morning Stars, to a thrilling goalless draw.

The game provided maximum entertainment, even though no goal was seen.

The referee, Mr Phumudzo Munyai, flashed the first yellow card in the ninth minute. Chippas’ centre back, Matshenyego Mamaila, found herself on the wrong side of the football laws when she tackled Shumani Tshikosi from behind.

Chippas' technical staff blundered by keeping their centre forward, Makwena “China” Mashalane, on the field of play throughout the first half, even though her performance was far below par. Mashalane proved that it was not her day in the 24th minute. She received a pre-cooked pass from Maggie Mukhuwana and unleashed aimlessly from edge of the box.  The ball went far wide, much to the fans’ disappointment.

Mashalane was also reprimanded with a card towards the end of the first half. This after she had obstructed the Stars’ keeper, Gumani Mulibana. Realizing that there was a likelihood for Mashalane to see red, they replaced her with Gudani Nephalama seven minutes into the last half.

Morning Stars were reduced to 10 men in the 67th minute. Their midfielder, Tshisevhe Lidzebe, was given her marching orders after kicking Maggie Mukhuwana intentionally.

Chippas failed to capitalize as the Stars continued to match them in all departments. Maggie Mukhuwana, the Chippas midfielder, also saw red after tackling Phuluso Mothelo from behind.

What could have been Stars’ winning goal was turned into a nightmare. Their centre forward, Munei Nemuramba, forced her way through the Chippas defence and shot straight to the keeper from within the box.
