Arsenal emerge as winners

Madombidzha Arsenal emerged as the champions of the Fhathalushaka Testing Station soccer challenge after beating Madombidzha Western Stars 3-1 in the final played at the Madombidzha grounds on Sunday.

Stars created several promising moves from behind in the opening minutes, but their strikers let them down by shooting aimlessly. Their overlapping midfielder, Silas Rammbona, had his chance in the 10thminute. He received a good pass from Tommy Mashau, but shot wide from just outside the box.

It took them only 14 minutes to get the vuvuzelas talking. Thabo Matuba forced his way through the defence of Stars and passed the ball to Lucky Buasi, who showed the keeper, Tshimanagdzo Masala, the wrong way. Stars knocked on Arsenal's door in the 24th minute. Hulisani Mbodi tried his luck from the edge of the box. His volley hit the crossbar and bounced out of the field of play for a goal kick.

Arsenal found the second goal in the 36thminute when Humbulani Mukwevho beat the keeper with a volley, following a brilliant pass from Takalani Sadiki. The score was 2-0 in favour of Arsenal when the teams adjourned for half time.

Stars reduced the margin in the 68thminute. Dzumbululo Thathani gave the ball a final touch after a scramble within the box.

Stars lost cohesion in the middle of the park after the goal. They were severely punished, and Arsenal made it 3-1 when Talifhani Mbelengwa’s close-range ground cutter was too hot for the Stars' keeper to handle.

Arsenal went home with R2 000, a floating trophy and gold medals. Stars received R1 000 and silver medals.
