This year the correctional officers in the Department of Correctional Services' Thohoyandou Management Area attended the sports day in large numbers.

Without adequate exercise, the mind tends to get fatigued

Officials from the Thohoyandou Correctional Centre and Makhado Correctional Centre sweated it out when they participated in different sporting codes as part of an integrated employee health and wellness day.

The event was held last Wednesday at the Makhado Show Grounds.

The spokesperson for the Thohoyandou and Makhado management areas of the Department of Correctional Services, Ms Emmah Maluleke, said that the day of wellness activities formed an integral part for the departmental promotion of employee health and wellness.

“The department always encourages officials to participate in sports activities as a way of improving their work performance and personal wellness,” Maluleke said. “Without adequate physical exercise, the mind tends to get fatigued, which also affects work production.”

Several sporting codes formed the core activities of the day, such as soccer, netball, tug-of-war, a fun walk, gymnastics and aerobics.

One of the correctional officials who had participated in the activities of the day, Ms Tshianeo Kutama, said that she had benefited from the exercises. “Once you have participated in the activities, you would feel energised to consider making exercising one's hobby or taking a gym card from a nearest gymnasium,” she said.

For the day, the Department of Correctional Services' Thohoyandou Management Area had partnered with several stakeholders to make the event a success. They included African Bank, Mahindra, Old Mutual, AVBOB, and GYM4You.
