Popular disco-music maker Ronald “The Lion” Mudau has proved that he is a versatile artist who can perform music from any genre. His first House single, titled “DJ Sindani”, on which he collaborated with bigshot musicians such as Batondy, Prossboy, Nelly T, and Zimbabwean artist Dzidzai “DK” Mamombe, was released on 4 February and is bound to be another hit among the fans.
The multi-talented musician from Hamakuya, in Mutale, has previously released two disco albums, “Vhadosenga Volume 1” (2010) and “Zwiita Shango Volume 2” (2018). Both these albums did well in the market, and he received the thumbs-up from disco-music lovers from all around, but over the years, he felt the need to experiment with other genres as well. In 2021, he took his fans completely by surprise when he released a jazz single, titled “Lufuno”, which also did well.
“As a musician, one must be familiar with all the genres to test the market. I am not just doing this for fun; I want to see what my fans like most. The latest single is an introduction to the full House album I plan on releasing later this year,” he said.
Besides being a musician, Mudau is also a seasoned actor. In 2010, he released his first movie, called “Ho vuwa Lihanya Part 1”, which became a phenomenal success. It was followed by “Zwido Fhelelafhi” in 2011, and in 2014, “Hovuwa Lihanya Part 2” was released.
Mudau further nurtures emerging musicians by providing music lessons under the Dzinambi na Zwilombe Group. “There is a lot of talent in our local villages, but so many of them are not able to realise their dreams because of the lack of music schools and music teachers. This is an important thing as it sharpens aspiring musicians’ skills and gives them a firm basis when they start their music careers,” he said.

The elders of the Tshivenda music group, Adziambei Band, have warned that the new generation seems to be reluctant to preserve their indigenous music, which is full of African identity and wisdom. Luckily for them, some young musicians still care about traditional music. One such local “son-of-the-soil” artist is Joshua Tshikalange, who is taking Tshivenda traditional music to another level.
When Calvin Nditsheni Luvhimbi grew up in the rural Musholombi village in Nzhelele, he always listened to radio programmes, especially those presented by DJ Sbu. The more he listened to the shows, the more his desire to become a radio presenter grew.
In a newly published book that had taken nearly a decade to research and complete, Tshilidzi Nembvumoni expands on the history of the Vhurivhuri people and their chieftainship quest. Nembvumoni, a resident of Vhurivhuri, said the research for his book, “Divhazwakale ya Vhurivhuri”, took a long time to complete, mainly because of challenges in verifying information.
