MEC for Transport warns law breakers this festive season

The time of year when high volumes of people return to their home countries via Limpopo’s roads and the Beitbridge Border Post has come around again. The Limpopo MEC for Transport and Community Safety, Florence Radzilani, issued a warning to all motorists that she would be intensifying road-safety campaigns over the festive season. Roadblocks will be conducted, as well as stop-and-search operations as an extra measure of precaution to ensure safety on the roads.

During an interview with the newspaper, Radzilani stated that the province was expected to see an increase in traffic volumes from this coming weekend that and law-enforcement officers would be deployed at all major routes across the province.

“Our focus during this festive season will be on speeding, reckless and negligent driving, driving under the influence, pedestrian safety, and public transport to reduce the rate of road-accident fatalities. A zero-tolerance approach will be enforced to make a meaningful contribution towards the achievement of the goals of the Decade of Action for Road Safety, with the integration of strict and intensive law-enforcement tactics with focused publicity campaigns. Law-enforcement agencies should work harder but always stay safe,” she said.

Radzilani encouraged all role players and community structures to focus more on road safety during the coming long weekend as Limpopo is one of the busiest provinces over this period.

“Many accidents are also caused by stray animals, particularly on roads closer to villages. We are calling upon all livestock farmers to look after their livestock to avoid unnecessary accidents. We are appealing to the various communities to cooperate with the police and traffic department. Violate traffic regulations and the basic rules of the road, and it will be at your peril,” she warned.
