“Police should be redefined” says Dr Roelofse

Dr Cornelis Roelofse from the department of Criminal Justice at the University of Venda recently published his first book, entitled The Challenges of Community Policing.

"The message I want to bring across is firstly that the police force should be redefined. Their role is not to do crime prevention, but to combat crime. It is the public's duty to do crime prevention," say Dr Roelofse.

The 125-page soft- cover book is based on the South African model of policing and features previously unpublished findings in this regard.

"Community policing can be implemented within a proper normative community. The problem is that normative communities have eroded, mainly through political ideology, moral degeneration and economic pressure. Only once community values, cohesion, mutual respect and support can be restored, will we see effective community policing," adds Dr Roelofse.

The book is published by Lexis Nexis and is available from www.lexisnexis.co.za or directly from Dr Roelofse at Tel 082 492 6156, 015 962 8326 or neels@univen.ac.za
