The Limpopo police are looking for a man who allegedly raped a 92-year-old granny in her home at Tshikwarani village in the Kutama area over the weekend.

According to a police report, the gogo was sleeping when the man broke the door of her house, raped her and then disappeared into the night. Col Moatshe Ngoepe, police spokesperson said that the victim lives on her own.

Provincial police commissioner Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba urged residents to keep an on eye the elderly in their area as they are often targeted by people who take advantage of their vulnerability. "The police members must hunt down the culprit and not rest until he is behind bars," Ledwaba said.

Thovhele Vho- Vele Kutama said it is a shame there were still such people in the community who would rape a defenceless gogo. "These types of incidents are not only a shame to the family of the suspect but leave an irreparable scar that will live with us for a long time," said Kutama. "It is high time that we work together with the police to ensure that we expose whoever is responsible. But if we do nothing, then we have only ourselves to blame because incidents such as these may continue."

He said it is always important that senior citizens are taken care of.
