A new-born baby was found by workers on a farm near Gateway truck stop early on the morning of Tuesday, 28 September. The abandoned baby girl was hidden in the bush, covered with grass and cardboard boxes.

According to Freek Clifford, chairperson of the Musina Community Forum, some farm workers noticed that a woman was wandering in the bush at around 08:00 that morning. They approached her, but she ran away in a northerly direction, towards Zimbabwe.

In trying to find out what the woman had been up to there, the workers searched around and heard a baby crying in the bush. The new-born baby was covered with grass and pieces of cardboard boxes. The workers immediately called the police, who in turn informed Clifford.

"I immediately called Musina ambulance services and within five minutes' time the ambulance, myself and the police were on our way to where the baby was found. The paramedics attended to the baby, who looked healthy," said Clifford. The baby girl was immediately taken to Musina Hospital.

"I want to thank the staff at Musina Hospital for their swift action," said Clifford.
