After 15-years, Thohoyandou Taxi Rank nears completion

The long-delayed Thohoyandou Taxi Rank Intermodal Facility, stalled since 2011, is finally nearing completion by August 2026.

The long-delayed, multi-million-rand Thohoyandou Taxi Rank Intermodal Facility is nearing completion after Limpopo Premier Dr Phophi Ramathuba intervened to unlock the stalled project in October last year.

The project, which began in 2011, is being implemented by the Department of Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure. It is expected to provide a modern transport hub for thousands of commuters in Thohoyandou and surrounding areas.

Construction started with an initial budget of R275 million, but the project remained incomplete after the funds were exhausted. By December 2025, expenditure had risen to R311 million.

During her State of the Province Address earlier this year, Ramathuba identified the taxi rank as one of several stalled projects on which progress was being made. However, residents and taxi operators had previously complained that little progress was visible on the ground.

MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure Ernest Rachoene recently visited the site and said he was satisfied with the progress made since construction resumed.

The project has been plagued by years of delays and escalating costs. Earlier this year, taxi operators and residents called for urgent action to complete the facility, saying commuters continued to rely on informal taxi ranks that lacked adequate shelter.

The South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) in Vhembe also raised concerns about the impact of the delays on passengers, particularly during the rainy season.

According to the department, the project was revived following Ramathuba's intervention. The current contractor, Matorokisi Holdings, was appointed in September 2025 to complete the remaining work.

Outstanding work includes the refurbishment of existing structures, waterproofing, electrical and mechanical installations, civil works and the implementation of a supplementary water system.

The facility is expected to be completed by August 2026. Once operational, it is expected to improve public transport services and provide safer, more organised facilities for commuters and taxi operators.
