After seven silent years, Khakhu Makuleni gets a new leader

After a seven-year silence, Tshililo Khakhu in Limpopo was installed as the new traditional leader of Khakhu Makuleni, restoring the royal lineage.

For seven years, the royal drums of Khakhu Makuleni fell silent following the passing of traditional leader Vhamusanda Vho Jackson Khakhu in 2018. But this past weekend, history turned a new page with the installation of Tshililo Khakhu as the new traditional leader, restoring the royal lineage and breathing life back into the heart of Khakhu Makuleni.

The event, held at Khakhu Secondary School on Saturday, 28 March, drew a large and diverse crowd, including community members, neighbouring villagers, church leaders, academics and dignitaries, among them Thulamela mayor Cllr Sarah Rammbuda and thovheles from different areas of the Vhembe region.

The sacred installation rites were presided over by senior traditional leader Thovhele Vho Thifhinduli Vicent Khakhu. As part of the age-old customs, the newly crowned leader received his royal name, Vhamusanda Vho Nthetsheleseni Khakhu. With the crowning also came the full structure of traditional leadership, with Ms Elekanyani Khakhu named as Khadzi, while Mr Edward Khakhu assumed the role of Ndumi.

In his address, Thovhele Khakhu did not mince words, calling on the new leader to embody integrity, humility and wisdom.

“You carry the hopes of a vast community. Lead with responsibility. Do not be swayed by gossip or those who seek to mislead you. Listen to voices that build, not those that destroy. And remember, our council stands ready to guide you.” he said

Thovhele Khakhu further expressed confidence in the new leader’s moral grounding, noting his strong affiliation with the ZCC as a guiding force in his leadership journey.

Taking to the podium, the newly installed Vhamusanda spoke with humility and vision.

“I am deeply honoured by this responsibility. I stand ready to serve. This will not be a one-man show as we will work together as a community. I have development ideas, but I will consult widely so that we move forward with unity and purpose with our Thovhele leading us.” he said.
