He is one of the country's top musicians, serving as a music producer, studio owner, and music engineer, but the humble Ananius Thifhelimbilu Begwa, better known as Ani B in music circles, prefers working behind the scenes. He continues to create the type of music that has made many artists popular in the music industry.
For the past two decades, the multi-instrumentalist has masterminded the successes of top artists such as gospel artist Albert Mudau, reggae sensation Kenny Murabi, reggae icon Khakhathi Tshisikule (better known as Murida), Just-ice, and guitar maestro David Mmbi. Although he has long worked for others, he is now working independently, having established his own studio.
Born in Maraxwe, outside Thohoyandou, his journey to success has not been easy. His music career began when he played different instruments at various churches and events. His popularity grew, and he became one of the most sought-after artists in Vhembe and across the province.
"Before I could realise my potential, some artists had already recognised me, and one of my first artists was the undisputed Venrap king, MizoPhyll. With the assistance of Rabelani Masia, currently Phalaphala FM's music compiler, we helped many artists produce their projects," he said.
Begwa has contributed immensely to the development of music in the Vhembe District and Limpopo as a whole, yet remains in the shadows, overshadowed by the artists he has produced.
"Lack of resources has limited my work, as I had to work in other people's studios where I could not fully express myself. I have spent years developing my own home studio in Maraxwe, and I can now proudly announce that the studio, Rise-up Studio, is fully operational. I am busy recording and producing new artists. I am unearthing raw talent from the surrounding villages, and I can tell you the truth—there is a lot of talent in this district. It is up to those of us with the means to nurture and develop it. This is my way of giving back to the community that raised me. I was helped by others when things were not adding up, and now I am in a position to do the same for others. That's what I am doing," Begwa said.
Award-winning gospel music legend Albert Mudau, who has consistently churned out hit after hit, had only compliments for the prolific producer. "I have worked with this man for years, and we have become a winning combination. He knows what I want, and this makes it very easy to come up with new ideas. He has a good ear for all types of music," he said.
