The Nzhelele community is mourning the sudden loss of Vhofhani Ragwena, chairperson of the African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) in Ward 33, who died in a vehicle accident on Sunday, 14 September.

According to Vhembe Police spokesperson W/O Vuledzani Dathi, the incident occurred at around 10:20 when a Toyota Hilux bakkie carrying 16 occupants overturned near Thathe on the R523. The group was reportedly returning from the Royal Heritage Festival held at Nandoni.

Ragwena, a 37-year-old resident of Tshavhalovhedzi village, died at the scene, while the other passengers were rushed to the nearest hospital. The police have opened a culpable homicide case and are investigating.

Ragwena's passing has left his family and the community devastated. His brother, Vhutshilo Ragwena, described the loss as heartbreaking. He said Vhofhani had been a friendly and accessible person who had dedicated his life to serving the community.

"Here at home, he made sure everything was in order. We saw Vhofhani as someone who knew how to organise things and who had great leadership skills. He was a great leader in our community. We want the youth to continue where Vhofhani left off – they must carry his vision with pride," Vhutshilo said.

Born on 12 April 1988 at Siloam Hospital, Ragwena attended Siloam Primary School before proceeding to Mushaathoni Secondary School, where he completed his matric. He furthered his studies at MSC Business College, pursuing information technology.

Ragwena served as branch chairperson of the ANCYL for two consecutive terms. During this time, he also served as a member of the ANC's branch executive committee (BEC), contributing to both the youth and the broader party leadership in Ward 33.

The ANCYL in Ward 33 expressed profound grief at his passing. Branch secretary and ward councillor Khuliso Mukheli said: "He served the movement with unwavering commitment and embodied the values of discipline, activism, and selfless service to the people. Our heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, and comrades during this difficult time. May they find comfort knowing that he lived a life of purpose and left a legacy of service to the youth and the broader community."

Ragwena's memorial service will be held on Friday, 19 September, at 14:00 at the Revelation Apostolic Church of Africa in Sendedza, Tshavhalovhedzi, with the burial scheduled for Saturday, 20 September, at the same church.
